There has always been one truth to follow, one ideal to govern all — you were to be forever independent. Life was never meant for the weak. It was never to be wasted. And you’ve striven to maintain the purpose promised in youth: you would be beholden to none and capable of anything.

But time is never so forgiving and you find yourself facing the beginnings of age. Being on your own is admirable. It’s also now impossible, however. You struggle through the simple routines. You falter with what was once so easy. There are days that seem unending, stretched painful as you shuffle through them.

You cannot be left alone any further. You instead need help.

The notion is appalling. You’ve never asked for anything, always sought instead to claim it yourself. Being reliant on others is a flaw you can’t (and won’t) endure. And even the suggestion of assisted living makes you furious.

It shouldn’t.

The purpose of assisted living is not to belittle your existence, to mark you somehow less than what you were. It’s instead merely to aid you with the activities that are now too difficult, to offer the support you never thought you deserved. Your days are not devalued. They are instead made simpler, with your focus then able to be given to all of the adventure you’ve yet to create. There will be no lost energy or stumbling moments. There will instead be the comfort of friends and family – all who wish to provide the affection you have earned.

You are a force unlike any other; and this will not — despite all of your certainties — change due to living in one of these facilities. You will still be yourself, only with the relief that comes from others managing the little details that consume so much of your time.

You can be assisted without being dependent.

The good thing about capsicum is that it is a vegetable that is almost like a spice. Being a vegetable, it is healthy for most elderly. Stay away from the usual spices, however; spices are not easily digestible, and some are known to increase your blood pressure. It is a good idea to go for herbal spices alone, and stay away from the rest. Maintaining a healthy, tasty diet is one of the most difficult part of elderly care.

Old age is a very delicate time for both a senior citizen and his family.
